Games people play
Apart from MUDs, many other pay-for-play or free game sites are available on the Internet. They enable players to compete against other players around the world. Besides, there are global casinos, which do not necessarily originate in the United States. US courts have no jurisdiction over them. Apart from the problem of regulating them, there is a serious social concern about compulsive and addictive behavior. Internet gamblers can forget the real world. What should be done?

I feel that the games that are available on the internet should not be controled. The main reason for this is because no person is forced to play that game or gamble online. It is up to the person to make the choice if they should play the game or not. The concern that people would become addicted to the game is real. However, we should hope that if one person becomes addicted to an internet game someone close to them would help them. Otherwise its use the games at your own risk. If you cannot control your actions then you have more problems then just a addiction to computer games. I think nothing should be done to limit the online games.

Online gaming jsuta s real gaming is made to be fun and enjoyable. GAming on line brings groups of poeple together for compotition that would noramlly never be together. This compotition makes the gaming fun. Internet gambing is also very poplular jsut like real world gambling. The internet gambling adds compotion in the ways other online games do. It also allows poepel to gamble from the comfort of their own homes. It also makes it cheeper than going ot a casino and less time consuming. Online gamblingjsut liek real world gambling can become addcitive and cause socail problems. Thses problems are made by ones won choice and shoudl be left alone and nothign should be doen about it becuae the person is only hurting themseslves and non one else. They are creating a victimless crime. The person might be doing undesired behavoir but i do not belive it was criminal behavoir. It is a matter of choice not in this situation not hurting anyone. Online gaming now is oversees and out of US jurisdition thats y it is legal now. I feel that the US shoudl leglize the gambling ebcuae it can beome a good US buioness and strong hold. By leglizing the online gambling industry in the US the government could also rgulate it like a casino nad makes sure the odds are somewhat fair. Who knows if a person odds are in an online casino or even if they have a chance at all. IF they dont to want to legalize it they shoudl leave it up to states becuae places like LasVegas would make a good place to station it out of. Lastly I feel that online gambling is good becuae it takes a market away form orginzed crime by competeing with book makers. It would relive much oraganized because poeple would now gamble legally and only gamble with money they have aand not get murder if they dont pay up. -- W. LaBelle-Boucher
ReplyDeleteI think that their should be nothing done with controling these internet games, because they are not the internet so that people can have a good time at thier home. If people are going to play it so much without it being a problem then that is thier problem. It is just common sense to realize that thier is something wrong when you play it all and you have a hard time stopping. It is just like the real world when gamblers have problems they have to stay a way from casisnos or be smart aboutit. They don't have a solution for the gamblers in the real world, The poeple who have problems in the real world are getting not controlled be sides when a person that cares for them helps them. The games are posted on the internet for entertainment and it should be visited any time that you want to. I think that if people want to enjoy a poker game on the internet, then they should. If people with problems can't get help or realized they do then maybe they should just not have a computer at all.
ReplyDeleteThe uses of the Internet are unlimited but so are the dangers. Internet gaming can be fun and exiting. Too be able to play games with people from all over the globe is an awesome capability. The type of games played is the real concern here. There is no problem with people playing games like checkers and even war games with each other. The problem comes when real world money is involved. There should be some type of regulation on online gambling. Say a person who does not realize the reality of an online casino enters his credit card numbers and begins to gamble and is taken away by the easy of it as well as the comfort of his own home. This person could loose all his money while sitting at his computer playing what he has begun to see as a computer game. No laws govern these casinos therefore there is no protection for the players. If properly regulated and done right, it is possible in a few years to log onto Las Vegas Online. People would no longer have to travel to Vegas and the amount of gambling in this country and others would skyrocket. All that I can think that could be done for this kind of thing to happen is for the formation of a legal jurisdiction of online gaming. Make it a branch of say the gaming commission or have it regulated by some overall rules and licensing. One law such an organization might enforce is a large disclaimer on every single page of a sight, saying that this is not a game you are playing with your real money.

I believe that there is no real help at this moment for those that are addicted to internet gambling. First of all, nothing is being monitored or censored. There is no one agency that regulates how much you can gamble. In other words, if a person want to give up and lose everything they own they can do it without anyone legally saying a word. There is no amendment or law that has been inflicted into society. I seriously believe that the government should create a federal agency that would prevent individuals from harming themselves finacially. Even though i do not believe the government can actually do because of individual right, there should be an exception because, the government is only losing valuable citizens to something evil.

True internet casinos can be a dangerious thing but you have to look at the whole picture of internet gameing. Some poeple say that it isolates people. I say it helps them meet and talk to new people that they may never have been able to see in person. It can bring together the entire internet community wether a person lives in Hong-Kong, England, Alaska, Brazil, Vermont. They can all get online and play games with eachother and build new relation ships over the internet. This is what I feel internet gaming is all about. I own an XBOX and basically all the games that XBOX puts out are now either online enabled or made for online play with "friends". And "friends" doesnt mean just the kid around the corner anymore. You can actually build a "friends list" on XBOX LIVE and invite people to play games over the net with you. Yu can ba alerted to when they get online if you are connected.
ReplyDeleteI guess what i am trying to say is the internet and gaming were made for each other and wether people want to gamble or race or whatever they should be aloud to do so. The US Government doesn't need to be the "world police".

Nothing special should happen in the situation of internet gambling. While the casinos out of US Jurisdiction cannot be regulated, all that means is a loss of revenue for the United States. There is no other reason why the US has an interest in regulating casinos. If some of them run fixed games that are unfair, the players will catch on and (with the capabilities of the internet) inform others about the unfairness of the games. It turns into a natural selection of casinos based of word of mouth and user reaction, which is easier to access on the internet than in the "real world".
ReplyDeleteThe fact that internet gaming can let people "forget the real world" is a minor revelation. The Film, TV, publishing and alcohol industries (all major factors in our economy) are in the business of providing an escape from the "real world". People watch films and shows, and read books to be transported to another place for time being. Some people drink alcohol to "loosen up" and forget about their lives for a while. In all of these circumstances the products can be abused. It is not the job of the government or these companies to police the consumption of these products, and the same goes for internet gaming. There is a gambling age requirement for a reason; these people are adults making decisions for which they are soley responsible.
It is likely that, due to less regulation and cheaper overhead, internet gaming (gambling and system based)will take over. Um, yeah.

ReplyDeleteIt looks like everyone is leaning in the same direction in saying that internet gameing or gambling, although not always safe, should be legal and is at the players own risk. I would have to agree that if someone wants to gamble then that's their business. Everyone, in this age, has been eduacted on the security measures that should be taken when using the internet and people are constantly warned of credit card risks.
ReplyDeleteIf worse came to worse and authorities had to step in and change internet gambling, i think a good idea would be to limit the budgets for betting to small change. This could keep the player in contact with the real world while still keeping him/her entertained.

Chase Jenne....Playing games online is extremely addicting. I think everyone has had a time where they found themselves playing numerous amounts of hours to one game, trying and trying to beat the high score. It is obvious to the public that there is a problem, but realistically with the amount of web sites out there; there is no way to control this epidemic. And as the use of credit gets lager among gamers the problem grows even more, people start to lose good credit become in debt and soon will have nothing to there name at all. Gambling is extremely addicting and when you win just a little you will keep going back for more and more till you lose everything, and this is what I feel is going on today. What is comes down to is that people who suffer from getting addicted to gambling need to search for help soon.
ReplyDeleteNo one is forced to participate in online gambling or online games. Although gambling online is very addictive and compulsive, this is not a social problem that can be easily controlled. As of right now, US courts have no jurisdiction over these websites and I think that it should stay that way. The problem of jurisdiction and the internet is a problem itself and when paired with the problem of online games, I cannot think of anything that should be done. There are organizations like Gambler's Anonymous dedicated to helping people with these problems, and that is sufficent.

The problem doesnt seem to be one that will ever be able to be controlled. People are going to choose their drug. It was gabling in casinos, and now it will be gambling on Internet casinos. These people whop have these problems may need to have a reality check at some point. What often happens with somene who is addicted to gambling is their life dissintigrates more and more until they are almost severed from reality. Many time, it is this experience that is needed to snap an addict out of his or her addiction or at least wake thm up to the reality that they have an addiction. I personally dont think much really can be dont about the problem.
